The Harrington Trophy Literature and Art Competition 2016

"To be or not to be? That is the question."

But there should be no question on whether you will enter either, or both, of these exciting competitions.

Watford Area Arts Forum, Watford Writers and Watford Live! would like to invite you to express your interpretation on a theme of Shakespeare in words or in pictures for this exciting annual competition, marking Shakespeare's death and the Shakespeare400 celebrations.

A life's work.

A 400-year legacy.

A year of celebrations.

Further details of both competitions can be found on the Watford Area Arts Forum website.

The Harrington Trophy Competition will form part of the Watford Live! 2016 Arts Festival.

Everyone is urged to get involved with the festival in June, but you can make a start now. The winner of each competition will receive a £50 cash prize and The Harrington trophy, 2nd prize is £30 and 3rd is £20. The cash prizes have been generously donated by Richard Harrington MP.

Writing Challenge

Can you come up with 500 words, they could be in the style of a factual or fictional story that you are bursting to write, with a nod to the Great Bard? You might put a modern twist on one of the great classics, maybe a modern day Antony and Cleopatra or Romeo and Juliet? How about developing a back story to one of Shakespeare's characters, Puck, Othello...? Or use a line from a play as your title, 'Midsummer Night's Dream'. There are endless options and ideas just waiting to be captured on paper.

The judging panel will include Richard Harrington MP, Watford Mayor Dorothy Thornhil and Grelle White, Editor of the WAAF magazine.

*The deadline for entry is Friday, May 6, and the results will be announced on Monday, June 6, at a Watford Writers' meeting. All entrants will be invited and the top ten stories will be read by the authors. The entries will be on display from 7.30pm at Cassio Lodge, Oddfellows Hall, The Avenue, Watford. This evening forms one of the Watford Live! events.

Full details for submitting your entry and full rules are available at www.watfordwriters.co.uk or www.watfordareaartsforum.com

Art Challenge

Please submit your work with the theme Shakespeare and your interpretation of this, but please give your pictorial entry a title other than Shakespeare. Do let your imagination run wild... the cauldron from Macbeth, a scene from 'The Winter's Tale'.

Entries can be in any form; oils, watercolours, pen and ink, collages, photographs etc. Please bring your entry along to Watford Museum on Friday 3rd June, between 11am and 1pm. All entries will be on display at the Museum (during normal opening hours) from June 11, until Saturday June 25th, please arrange to collect your work that afternoon after the presentations. An independent judge will be assessing the top three entries.

On Saturday, June 25th, at 2.30pm, presentations will be made to the winners of both competitions at Watford Museum.

After which, as the great man said, "All's well that ends well."
